The necessity and justification for this education are confirmed by fact that despite the guidelines for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, many patients, especially in the South-East European region remain inadequately treated for risk factors, acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, or atrial fibrillation and adherence to treatments is not optimal. Latest surveys from EUROASPIRE III and IV and SURF show that many patients with pre-existing coronary artery disease are not on recommended therapies and treatment patterns vary considerably between regions, even within a limited geographic region such as the South-East European (SEE). While treatment of individual risk factors may be adequate, combined treatment and goal attainment for multiple risk factors, such as LDL-C, blood pressure and A1C levels together with diabetes is often insufficient, requiring implementation of systematic efforts to address all required risk factors in primary and secondary prevention.
