Wissenschaft im Überblick

In this comprehensive survey article, Klaus-Dirk Henke examines the development of and updates health economics as a teaching subject and an area of research over the past 40 years. As opposed to health economics as a topic of research, healthcare is at the same time a thriving industry which he analyzes. In both cases transparency and reliable information are prerequisites for good governance in health. The author also elaborates on the interdependence between health economics as a research field on the one side and the health care industry as an economic branch on the other. The article is oriented mainly to German experience including an extensive bibliography peppered with some international citations including from WHO on quality as the extent to which the health care services provided to individuals and patient populations improve desired health outcomes. To achieve this health care must be safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable and people-centred. Henke is a frequent visiting professor of the ECPD and has already brought this know-how to the Balkan region, most recently in summer schools. He is the recipient of many awards including the Gérard-Gäfgen-Medal and one from the ECPD. { Published Online: 2019-04-12 | DOI: https://doi.org/10.1515/pwp-2019-0012 }
